Binomial Expression

A polynomial with two terms usually joined by a plus or minus sign is called a binomial. Binomials are used in algebra. Polynomials with one term will be called a monomial and could look like 7x. A polynomial with two terms is called a binomial; it could look like 3x + 9.

Example of Binomials Expressions:

  • 3x+4y
  • 8xy+9
  • 3x+4z
  • 3xy+9yz
  • Illustration: Which of the following expressions are binomial?

                       4uv, 5xyz-6, 9y+5, 44xz

Solution: As we know that A polynomial with two terms usually joined by a plus or minus sign is called a binomial. Hence 5xyz-6 and 9y+5 are binomial expressions. But 4uv and 44xz contain only one term. Hence 4uv and 44xz are monomials.

Illustration: Which of the following expressions are binomials?

                         6x-7y, 5y+2z, 4t, 8u

Solution: As we know that A polynomial with two terms usually joined by a plus or minus sign is called a binomial. Hence 6x-7y and 5y+2z are binomial expressions. But 4t and 8u contain only one term. Hence 4t and 8u are monomials.
